Madam
Tsang Kor Sing was born in China and educated in Macao and Hong Kong specializing in
classical Chinese literature. She married the late Mr. Boon-lap Lai and was a full
time housewife in caring for their five children. She instilled in her children her
philosophy of serving the community. The focus of her services were the Buddhist
community and her village associations. Her four decades of volunteer services can
be highlighted in the following manner:
1. She was the founding member
of the Hong Kong Buddhist Association in 1953 and served as a board member until 1998 when
she immigrated to the United States. For her long and distinguished contribution to
the Buddhist Association and the Buddhist community at large, Mrs. Lai was given the title
of Honorable Advisor for life.
2. She was elected in 1956 as
Hong Kong Outstanding Mother of the Year.
3. In the early 1970's, she was
elected Vice President of the International Buddhist Association, Hong Kong Branch.
4. She was one of the founding
members of the Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital and later became a member of the hospital's
Board of Trustee.
5. She was also a founding
member of the Hong Kong Buddhsit Cemetery Association.
6. She also served on the board
of the following family associations: Chung Shan District Merchant Association,
Tsang Family Association, and the Kwong Lai Ho Family Association.
7. She was a school board member
for five Buddhist primary and secondary schools.
8. She founded the Buddhist
Tsang Kor Sing Kindergarten in 1981. The Kindergarten is a government subsidized
non-profit making school in Hong Kong.
As
a tribute to their mother's long time commitment and achievements in charitable work and
community services, the children establish a memorial scholarship at the Hong Kong
Buddhist Wong Fung Ling High School in memory of their parents.
